After several dates for principal photography to begin, ranging between March and April 2011, were reported, it finally began on 29 April 2011 at AVM Studios in Chennai. In a turn of events, Rajinikanth fell ill on set and was treated for dehydration and exhaustion at a hospital, after being diagnosed with a mild foodborne illness, resulting in postponment of filming.He was admitted to St. Isabel's Hospital in Mylapore and seemed to experience vomiting. However, he seemed to be making a quick recovery and his son-in-law Dhanush said it was no big problem and that he would make a quick recovery
The pooja event saw Chow Ramasamy, Director Balachander, Director Balu Mahendra, Lyricist Vaali, Producer Panchu Arunachalam, Cameraman Ratnavelu.
The other guests include, SP Muthuraman, Lyricist Vairamuthu, dance master Raghuram, Rajini's daughters Aishwarya Rajinikanth & Soundarya Rajinikanth, Producer Suresh Krishna, actor producer Panchu Subbu, Sathya Jyothi Films Producer RM Veerappan, singer TM Soundarrajan graced the occasion.
The first shot was taken in the lucky mascot place at the Pillayar Kovil inside the AVM Studios.
